What Not to Write in a Coworker's Farewell Card

A farewell card is usually something the recipient will keep — and sometimes something other people will see. Before you hit send, consider leaving out:

• private details about why they're leaving unless they've openly shared them;
• jokes that could embarrass them outside your immediate circle;
• complaints about the company, manager or other coworkers;
• exaggerated praise that doesn't match your actual relationship;
• sensitive information about where they're going next;
• anything you wouldn't be comfortable with the recipient rereading a year from now.

When in doubt, warm and simple is usually better than clever and risky.
